Babbitt, Sinclair Lewis's novel of 1922, follows George F. Babbitt, a prosperous real-estate man in the Midwestern city of Zenith, through a year or so of his comfortable middle age. Babbitt belongs to the Boosters' Club, votes as his friends vote, worships his motor car and his alarm clock, and repeats the slogans of his business class with complete sincerity. When his closest friend's life falls apart, Babbitt drifts into a brief rebellion against everything he has stood for, and discovers how little room Zenith leaves for dissent. Lewis's ear for advertising talk and after-dinner speeches made the book a satire of American conformity, and gave the language a new word.
