Main Street
Main Street, published in 1920, made Sinclair Lewis famous. Carol Milford, a college-educated librarian from St. Paul, marries the country doctor Will Kennicott and goes to live in Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, a town of three thousand people with a Main Street of false-front stores and a Thanatopsis Club that discusses English poetry in one afternoon. Carol arrives determined to bring beauty and ideas to the prairie and finds a community satisfied with itself, suspicious of anything foreign, and expert at gossip. Her attempts at reform, her friendships with the town's few misfits and her marriage are followed over a dozen years. Lewis's portrait of small-town America was both a best seller and a provocation.
