Free Air
Free Air, published in 1919, is Sinclair Lewis's cheerful novel of the open road, written before Main Street made him famous. Claire Boltwood, a well-bred young woman from Brooklyn Heights, drives her exhausted father west from Minneapolis to Seattle in the family roadster, at a time when transcontinental motoring meant mud, broken axles and tourist camps. Milt Daggett, a small-town garage mechanic from Schoenstrom, Minnesota, follows in his home-built car, pulling her out of ditches and quietly falling in love. The comedy turns on class, as Claire's Seattle relations take Milt's measure and he takes theirs. Lewis knew the roads and the towns, and the detail is exact.
