The Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels

by John William Burgon

About 7 h 04 min of reading71 chapters

John William Burgon, dean of Chichester and a fierce critic of the Revised Version, died in 1888 before completing his defense of the traditional Greek text of the Gospels; Edward Miller completed this volume from his papers in 1896. Against the critics Westcott and Hort, who preferred the ancient Vatican and Sinaitic manuscripts, Burgon argues that the text preserved in the great majority of manuscripts and quoted by the early Fathers is the true one. He sets out seven notes of truth for judging readings, then examines the witness of the Fathers, the early Syriac and Latin versions, the old uncials and the later manuscripts. Learned and combative, it remains a key work for that position. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
