The Causes of the Corruption of the Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels

by John William Burgon

Being the Sequel to The Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels

About 6 h 25 min of reading97 chapters

The Causes of the Corruption of the Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels was left unfinished by John William Burgon, dean of Chichester, and completed and edited by Edward Miller in 1896, as the sequel to their Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels. Burgon, a fierce opponent of the revised Greek text of Westcott and Hort, argues that the oldest surviving manuscripts preserve corruptions, and classifies their causes: accidental errors of scribes, such as omissions and confusion of letters, and intentional changes made for harmony, assimilation, liturgical use or doctrinal motives. Many passages of the Gospels are examined in detail. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
