The Last Twelve Verses of the Gospel According to S. Mark
John William Burgon, a fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, and a combative defender of the traditional text of the New Testament, published this study in 1871. His subject is the ending of the Gospel of Mark, chapter sixteen, verses nine to twenty, which several leading textual critics of his day had rejected because they are missing from the two oldest Greek manuscripts. Burgon examines the evidence of the manuscripts, the ancient versions, the Church Fathers and the lectionaries, and argues at length that the verses are genuine. Learned, detailed and often sharp in tone, the book remains a classic statement of one side of an argument that continues today, and includes facsimiles of the key manuscripts. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
