The Revision Revised, published in 1883, collects three articles that John William Burgon, Dean of Chichester, had written for the Quarterly Review against the Revised Version of the New Testament issued in 1881, together with his reply to the pamphlet in which Bishop Ellicott defended the revisers. Burgon attacks the new Greek text for abandoning the readings of the great majority of manuscripts in favor of a handful of early codices, attacks the textual theory of Westcott and Hort on which that choice rested, and attacks the revisers' English as uncouth beside the Authorized Version; a final section vindicates the traditional reading God was manifest in the flesh in 1 Timothy 3:16. The polemic is learned and violent. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
