The Song of the Lark
The Song of the Lark, published in 1915, follows Thea Kronborg from her childhood in Moonstone, a small Colorado railroad town, to the opera stages of Europe and New York. The daughter of a Swedish Methodist minister, she is encouraged by the town doctor, a Mexican musician, a railroad man and a drunken old music teacher, and goes to Chicago to study piano, where she discovers her voice. A summer among the cliff dwellings of an Arizona canyon shows her what art is for. Willa Cather traces the cost of talent with unusual patience, and drew in part on the life of the Wagnerian soprano Olive Fremstad.
