O Pioneers! is Willa Cather's second novel, published in 1913 and the first of her books set on the Nebraska prairie she knew as a child. Alexandra Bergson, the daughter of Swedish immigrants, inherits her dying father's struggling farm on the Divide and, against her brothers' caution, stakes everything on the land. Over sixteen years she becomes one of the most prosperous farmers in the county, while her beloved younger brother Emil and the married Bohemian neighbor Marie Shabata drift toward a tragedy she does not see coming. Cather tells the story in five parts, in plain and unhurried prose, with the land itself as the real protagonist, and dedicated the book to Sarah Orne Jewett. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
