Willa Cather (1873–1947) was an American novelist, born in Virginia and taken at nine to the Nebraska prairie, whose immigrant farmers she would make her subject. After the University of Nebraska she worked as a journalist and teacher in Pittsburgh and as managing editor of McClure's Magazine in New York before turning to fiction full-time. O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark and My Ántonia (1918) form her prairie trilogy; One of Ours won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and A Lost Lady, The Professor's House and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927) followed. She lived in New York with her companion Edith Lewis and guarded her privacy closely.
