My Ántonia, published in 1918, is Willa Cather's novel of the Nebraska prairie, told by Jim Burden, who arrives as an orphan of ten on the same train that brings the Shimerdas, a Bohemian family, to a farm nearby. Their daughter Ántonia becomes his friend through a hard first winter, her father's suicide, the move to the town of Black Hawk and the dances where the immigrant hired girls scandalize the respectable families. Jim goes east to university and the law; Ántonia stays, is deserted, and makes a life anyway. Cather's prose is plain and the structure loose, built of remembered scenes, and the book is widely regarded as her finest.
