The Sexual Life of Our Time was the Berlin physician Iwan Bloch's attempt at a complete survey of the sexual sciences, and this English version by M. Eden Paul, made from the sixth German edition, appeared in London in 1909, its sale at first restricted to doctors and lawyers. Bloch moves from the biology of love and the physical and psychological differences between the sexes, with a chapter on the woman question, to religion and sexuality, modesty and clothing, the individualization of love, the arts, marriage and its alternatives, prostitution and venereal disease. He treats sex as a matter of culture as well as medicine, in a book that helped found the modern study of sexuality.
