The second volume of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine, published with the first in 1888, is titled Anthropogenesis and deals with the origin of humanity. Twelve stanzas from the Book of Dzyan, expounded verse by verse, describe the descent of the human race through successive root races on vanished continents, including Lemuria and Atlantis, and the awakening of mind. Later sections read the Hindu, Egyptian, Greek, Norse and biblical myths of giants, floods and fallen angels as records of this history, and the final part argues at length against Darwin and the geologists of the day over the antiquity of man and the age of the earth.
