The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 1 of 4
The Synthesis of Science, Religion, and Philosophy
The Secret Doctrine, published in 1888, is the central work of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, the founder of the Theosophical Society. This first volume, Cosmogenesis, is built around seven stanzas said to be translated from an ancient Book of Dzyan, which Blavatsky expounds verse by verse as an account of the origin of the universe: the awakening of the cosmos from its night, the seven planes of being, the chain of globes, and the cycles through which worlds evolve. Further sections compare the system with Hindu, Buddhist, Kabbalistic and Hermetic symbolism and argue with the physics and astronomy of the day. Whatever one makes of its claims, the book shaped a century of esoteric thought. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
