The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is Edward FitzGerald's version of quatrains attributed to the eleventh-century Persian mathematician and astronomer, a sequence of meditations on wine, the brevity of life, the silence of heaven and the wisdom of enjoying the present hour. FitzGerald selected, rearranged and freely recast his material, and the poem that resulted is as much his as Omar's. First published anonymously in 1859 and ignored until Rossetti and Swinburne discovered it in a remainder bin, it went through four revisions and became one of the most quoted poems in English. This edition gives both the first edition and the fifth, with FitzGerald's introduction on the astronomer-poet and his notes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
