The Poetical Works of John Skelton, Volume 1 (of 2)
The first volume of Alexander Dyce's edition of John Skelton, published in 1843 and the basis of later texts, presents the poet of the court of Henry VII and Henry VIII in his own spelling, with a memoir, notes and appendices including the Merie Tales of Skelton and a list of editions. Here are the early elegy on Edward IV, the dream allegory The Bowge of Court, the long lament Phyllyp Sparowe for a schoolgirl's pet killed by a cat, The Tunnyng of Elynour Rummynge, a riotous picture of an alewife and her customers, the flyting poems against Garnesche, Ware the Hawke, and the poems against the Scots after Flodden. Skelton's short, tumbling, rhyme-driven lines, the Skeltonics, are his own. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
