The Pleasures of Life

by Sir John Lubbock

About 4 h 38 min of reading42 chapters

The Pleasures of Life grew out of addresses Sir John Lubbock gave at schools, colleges and working men's institutes, and was published in two parts in 1887 and 1889. The banker, politician and naturalist argues that happiness is largely within reach of everyone who uses the gifts already at hand. The first part treats the duty of happiness, the happiness of duty, books, friends, time, travel, home, science and education, and includes his famous list of a hundred books worth reading. The second turns to ambition, wealth, health, love, art, poetry, music, the beauties of nature, the troubles of life, labor and rest, religion, progress and the destiny of man. It was among the best-selling books of its decade. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
