The Officer's Manual: Napoleon's Maxims of War
Napoleon's Maxims of War is a set of seventy-eight short military precepts compiled from the emperor's writings and recorded sayings after his death, first published in France in 1827 and translated into English in 1831 by Sir George D'Aguilar, who added to each maxim a note illustrating it from the campaigns of Napoleon, Frederick, Turenne and other commanders. They treat the frontiers of a state, the plan of a campaign, marches, the use of reserves, sieges, fortresses, the qualities of a general and the morale of troops. This American edition was reissued at the outbreak of the Civil War with a recommendation from General Winfield Scott, who thought it likely to be called for by many officers, regular and volunteer. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
