The Lusiad, or The Discovery of India is the national epic of Portugal, published by Luís de Camões in 1572 and translated into English heroic couplets by William Julius Mickle in 1776. In ten books it tells of the voyage of Vasco da Gama around Africa to India in 1497 and 1498, with Venus protecting the Portuguese and Bacchus working against them. Along the way Gama recounts the whole history of Portugal to the king of Melinde, the giant Adamastor rises from the Cape of Storms to curse the fleet, and the returning sailors are rewarded on the Isle of Love.
