The Logic of Chance, 3rd edition
An Essay on the Foundations and Province of the Theory of Probability, With Especial Reference to Its Logical Bearings and Its Application to Moral and Social Science and to Statistics
The Logic of Chance, first published in 1866 and largely rewritten for this third edition of 1888, is John Venn's essay on the foundations of probability. Venn, a Cambridge logician now remembered for his diagrams, argues that probability is a property of series of events observed over the long run, not a measure of anyone's state of mind, and he insists that the book requires no mathematics beyond arithmetic. He discusses randomness, laws of error and the measurement of belief, criticizes the rule of succession and loose arguments about design, and applies his view to insurance and gambling, the credibility of witnesses and extraordinary stories, and averages in social statistics.
