The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
Against his father's advice, the young Robinson Crusoe of York goes to sea, is enslaved by Moorish pirates, prospers in Brazil and is finally wrecked alone on an island off the mouth of the Orinoco, where he lives for twenty-eight years. The heart of the book is his inventory of survival: salvaging the ship, building shelters, taming goats, baking bread, keeping a calendar and a journal, and later the footprint in the sand, the cannibals and the man he names Friday. Daniel Defoe published it in 1719 as a true account, and it is often called the first English novel. This edition gives the first and most famous part of Crusoe's story, in twenty chapters. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
