The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders

by Daniel Defoe

About 9 h 13 min of reading3 chapters

Moll Flanders, published in 1722, is Daniel Defoe's account of a woman born in Newgate prison who, as the title page promises, was twelve years a whore, five times a wife, once to her own brother, twelve years a thief and eight years a transported felon in Virginia, before she grew rich, lived honestly and died a penitent. Told in Moll's own voice, the story follows her through love affairs, marriages, widowhood, poverty and a brilliant career as a pickpocket in London, until she is caught and sentenced. Defoe presents it as a warning, but Moll's energy, wit and will to survive make her one of the most vivid characters in early English fiction. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
