The Idea of a University Defined and Illustrated

by John Henry Newman

In Nine Discourses Delivered to the Catholics of Dublin

About 10 h 41 min of reading212 chapters

The Idea of a University brings together the nine discourses John Henry Newman delivered in Dublin in 1852, as rector-designate of the new Catholic University of Ireland, and the lectures and essays on university subjects he wrote over the following years. The discourses define a university as a place of teaching universal knowledge, argue that theology is a branch of knowledge and cannot be excluded, that the sciences bear on one another and knowledge is its own end, and describe the liberal education that forms what Newman calls a gentleman, with its limits as a training of the mind rather than of the soul. The prose is among the most admired of the nineteenth century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
