An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine

by John Henry Newman

About 9 h 05 min of reading92 chapters

An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine was written by John Henry Newman in 1845, while he was deciding to leave the Church of England, and he was received into the Roman Catholic Church before it was printed. Its problem is the historical one that Protestant controversialists pressed: how can a church whose teaching has visibly changed over eighteen centuries claim to preserve the faith once delivered? Newman answers that living ideas develop, and he proposes seven notes, among them preservation of type, continuity of principles and chronic vigor, by which a genuine development can be distinguished from a corruption, applying them to the papacy, the sacraments and the cult of the saints. This is the revised edition of 1878. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
