Apologia pro vita sua

by John Henry Newman

About 9 h 20 min of reading45 chapters

Apologia pro Vita Sua is John Henry Newman's account of his religious development, written in 1864 in reply to Charles Kingsley, who had accused him and the Roman clergy of indifference to truth. Newman answers by telling his own story: the Evangelical boyhood, the Oxford Movement and the Tracts for the Times, the gradual loss of confidence in the Anglican position between 1839 and 1841, the years of silence at Littlemore, and his reception into the Catholic Church in 1845. A final chapter describes the position of his mind since then. Notes and supplementary documents follow. The book is valued as much for its prose and its candor as for its argument. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
