Barrie MacDonald has grown up in a grim house outside Carlisle with a grandmother who never mentions her mother. A chance discovery in a locked garret tells her that the mother is alive and an actress, and Barrie runs away to find her. She falls in with a famous painter and his motoring party, and the journey north through the Lowlands and Highlands, with its castles, lochs and heather, becomes a courtship as well as a search.
