Set in Silver
Set in Silver, published in 1909, is told entirely in letters, most of them from Audrie Brendon to her French mother in Switzerland. Audrie, an American girl teaching in Versailles, agrees to impersonate a school friend for a few weeks so that the friend can elope, and finds herself traveling as the ward of Sir Lionel Pendragon, a soldier and colonial administrator newly returned from the East, on a motor tour through England. Letters from Sir Lionel to a fellow officer and from a scheming widow to her sister fill in what Audrie cannot see. The Williamsons take the party from Winchester and Stonehenge to Cornwall, the Wye valley and the north, and the deception becomes harder to keep up as feelings change. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
