The Car of Destiny
The narrator, a Spanish nobleman of Carlist family who is forbidden to set foot in Spain, sees Lady Monica Vale at Biarritz and falls in love. When she is carried off into Spain by her ambitious mother, who intends her for a wealthy duke, he follows in his motor car under an assumed English name, with an American friend and a chauffeur, across the Pyrenees and down through Burgos, Madrid, Toledo and Seville during Holy Week. Charles and Alice Williamson wrote a long series of these motoring romances together, and this one, published in 1907, combines a chase, a disguise and a love story with a traveler's guide to Spain. The cars are new enough to be exciting and old enough to break down. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
