The Greek Philosophers, Vol. 2 (of 2)

by Alfred William Benn

About 9 h 45 min of reading66 chapters

This second volume of Alfred William Benn's The Greek Philosophers, published in London in 1882, follows ancient thought after Aristotle. It begins with the Stoics, turns to Epicurus and his Roman disciple Lucretius, then to the Sceptics and Eclectics and the reception of Greek philosophy at Rome, and goes on to the religious revival of late antiquity, in which philosophy became a path to salvation. Benn, an English rationalist scholar who spent most of his life in Florence, writes as a critic as well as a historian: he weighs each school's arguments against modern science and morals, and traces the routes by which Greek ideas passed into Christian and modern Europe. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
