Unknown to her, the Prince was once in love with her friend Charlotte Stant, who later marries Maggie's widowed father. The four are bound together in an intimacy whose hidden terms Maggie only slowly comes to understand, and the gilded crystal bowl with a hidden flaw that gives the novel its title becomes the sign of what she discovers. Divided into the Prince's book and the Princess's book, it is dense, subtle and intensely dramatic.
