Daisy Miller: A Study
Daisy Miller, published in 1878, is the short novel that made Henry James's reputation. Winterbourne, a young American long resident in Geneva, meets Daisy at a hotel in Vevey: pretty, rich, unchaperoned, and entirely indifferent to the rules by which Europeanized Americans judge a girl's conduct. In Rome that winter she walks in the Pincio and visits the Colosseum by moonlight with an Italian of no position, and the expatriate colony closes its doors to her. Winterbourne cannot decide whether she is innocent or merely reckless, and his hesitation is the real subject. James subtitled the piece "A Study," and its two parts are among his most read pages.
