Henry James (1843–1916) was an American novelist who lived most of his adult life in England and became a British subject in 1915, the year before his death. Born in New York to a wealthy and intellectual family, the brother of the philosopher William James, he made the encounter between Americans and Europeans his central subject in novels such as The Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove and The Ambassadors. He also wrote novellas and ghost stories, including The Turn of the Screw and The Aspern Papers, and influential essays on the craft of fiction. His late style, with its long, qualified sentences, is famously demanding.
