The Ambassadors
The Ambassadors, published by Henry James in 1903, follows Lambert Strether, a middle-aged American from Woollett, Massachusetts, who is sent to Paris by the wealthy widow he hopes to marry to bring home her son Chad, believed to be in the clutches of a wicked woman. Strether finds Chad improved rather than ruined, falls under the spell of the city and of Madame de Vionnet, the woman in question, and comes slowly to doubt the mission and the life he has led. When the family sends a second embassy, he must choose. James considered it the best of his novels, and its famous advice, live all you can, is Strether's to a young man in a Paris garden.
