The gardener

by Rabindranath Tagore

About 56 min of reading2 chapters

The Gardener, published in 1913, is a collection of love poems by Rabindranath Tagore, translated from Bengali into English prose by the author himself. Written in his youth and reworked for this volume, the poems speak in many voices, a servant asking to be made gardener to the queen, a girl at the riverbank, a traveler, a bride, lovers meeting and parting, and they turn on glances, flowers, boats, the changing of seasons and the shortness of life. Tagore dedicated the book to W. B. Yeats, who had introduced Gitanjali the year before. The lyrics are secular where Gitanjali was devotional, though the line between the two is never firm in Tagore. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
