Stray Birds

by Rabindranath Tagore

About 24 min of reading326 chapters

Stray Birds, published in 1916, is a collection of more than three hundred short poems and aphorisms by Rabindranath Tagore, written in English and partly translated from his own Bengali. Each piece is a sentence or two: an image of birds, clouds, dust, rain, a fallen leaf or a lamp, turned toward a thought about love, death, God, art or the passage of time. The book was dedicated to the Japanese painter Hara Tomitaro, in whose house Tagore stayed during his visit to Japan, and its brevity owes something to his encounter with the haiku. It is among the most translated of his works and has been especially loved in China. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
