Gitanjali
Gitanjali is the collection of prose poems with which Rabindranath Tagore introduced himself to the English-speaking world in 1912, translating from his own Bengali songs. Short, direct and addressed to a God who is at once lover, friend and king, the poems speak of waiting, longing, the beauty of the natural world, the nearness of death and the wish to be emptied of pride. W. B. Yeats wrote the introduction and championed the book, and the following year Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first awarded to a writer outside Europe and America. The English versions are freer than the originals but have a music of their own. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
