Nationalism

by Rabindranath Tagore

About 1 h 47 min of reading4 chapters

Nationalism collects three lectures Rabindranath Tagore gave in Japan and the United States in 1916 and 1917, with a closing poem, The Sunset of the Century, written on the last day of 1899. Speaking during the First World War, Tagore argues that the Nation, by which he means the organized political and commercial power of a people, has become a machine that devours the human qualities of the societies it serves. He warns Japan against copying the West's worst habits, and in the lecture on India he insists that caste and the problem of race, not foreign rule alone, are the country's real burden. The book angered readers in Japan and America and remains his most direct political statement. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
