The Elder Eddas of Saemund Sigfusson; and the Younger Eddas of Snorre Sturleson

by Sæmundur fróði

Translated by Joseph Andrew Blackwell and Benjamin ThorpeAbout 5 h 48 min of reading121 chapters

This volume combines Benjamin Thorpe's translation of the Elder, or Poetic, Edda with I. A. Blackwell's translation of the Younger, or Prose, Edda of Snorri Sturluson, in the edition issued by the Norroena Society in 1906. The Poetic Edda, traditionally and wrongly attributed to the Icelandic priest Sæmund the Learned, contains the oldest Norse mythological poems: the Völuspá, in which a seeress foretells the doom of the gods, the proverbial Hávamál, the lays of Vafthrudnir, Grimnir, Thrym, Skirnir and Rig, and Loki's flyting with the gods. Snorri's Edda retells the myths in prose as a handbook for poets. Together they are the main sources for everything known of the old Scandinavian religion. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
