The Dunwich horror

by H. P. Lovecraft

About 1 h 10 min of reading1 chapters

In the decayed Massachusetts hill town of Dunwich, a child named Wilbur Whateley is born to an albino mother and no known father, grows at an impossible rate, and spends his short life hunting through the libraries of New England for a complete copy of the Necronomicon. His grandfather, meanwhile, keeps enlarging the farmhouse and buying cattle that are never seen again. After Wilbur dies in the Miskatonic University library, trying to steal the book, something he left behind breaks out, and three professors from Arkham must find a way to see it before they can fight it. Lovecraft wrote the story in 1928, and it is one of the few in which his scholars win. The whippoorwills are drawn from life. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the opening pages are free.
