H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer of horror and weird fiction who lived almost all his life in Providence, Rhode Island, the city whose colonial houses fill his stories. A sickly, precocious child raised by his mother and aunts, he never finished school, lived on a dwindling inheritance and published only in the pulp magazines, chiefly Weird Tales. "The Call of Cthulhu," "The Shunned House," "The Dunwich Horror" and At the Mountains of Madness imagine a universe indifferent to humanity. He died of cancer at forty-six, poor and little known; his friends' efforts after his death made him the most influential horror writer of the century.
