At the Mountains of Madness

by H. P. Lovecraft

About 2 h 40 min of reading12 chapters

A geologist from Miskatonic University, back from an expedition to Antarctica, writes to dissuade another party from going. His account describes a camp wiped out by something other than the weather, a mountain range higher than the Himalayas, and beyond it a vast dead city built millions of years before mankind, whose sculptured walls tell the history of its builders and of the shapeless things they created to serve them. Lovecraft wrote the novella in 1931 and it appeared in Astounding Stories in 1936. It is the longest and most carefully worked of his tales, drawing on the Antarctic expeditions of the day, and it treats its horrors with an almost scientific regret. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
