The call of Cthulhu

by H. P. Lovecraft

About 48 min of reading1 chapters

The Call of Cthulhu is assembled from papers left by a Providence professor and sorted through by his nephew. A clay bas-relief carved by a dreaming artist, a police raid on a swamp cult in Louisiana, and a Norwegian sailor's account of an island that rose from the Pacific all point to the same thing: a vast creature sleeping beneath the sea, worshiped in secret and waiting for the stars to come right. Lovecraft wrote the story in 1926 and it appeared in Weird Tales in 1928. It is the piece that gave his invented mythology its name, and it works by accumulation, each document more unsettling than the last, while the narrator insists he wishes he had never pieced them together. The story can be read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening is free.
