Thomas Moore was the national poet of Ireland in the eyes of his contemporaries and one of the most popular writers of the early nineteenth century. This edition of the poems he collected himself, with his explanatory notes and a biographical sketch by William Michael Rossetti, opens with his youthful translation of the Odes of Anacreon and gathers the Irish Melodies, set to traditional airs, Lalla Rookh, his oriental romance in verse, The Loves of the Angels, his satires and many songs and occasional pieces. Lines such as The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer are still sung today. The volume's title wrongly calls him Sir; Moore was never knighted. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
