The Black Abbot

by Edgar Wallace

About 6 h of reading66 chapters

Harry Alford, the young Earl of Chelford, is pale, bookish and obsessed with the legend of a treasure hidden somewhere at Fossaway Manor; he is also furious at servants' talk of a ghostly Black Abbot seen walking the grounds at night. His practical brother Dick runs the estate, a solicitor and his moneylender partner have designs on the family, and the women in the case include the earl's fiancee and her brother's secretary. Edgar Wallace published the novel in 1926, at the height of his output, and it combines a country-house mystery, a ghost that may or may not be flesh and blood, and a treasure hunt that ends in the cellars. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
