Four square Jane

by Edgar Wallace

About 2 h 20 min of reading12 chapters

A thief who leaves a small card marked with a square and the name Jane is robbing the rich of London, giving much of the proceeds to hospitals and making the detectives on her trail look foolish. Her victims are a shady financier and his circle; the man hunting her is a Scotland Yard officer who begins to suspect that the ladylike crook is someone he has met in daylight. Edgar Wallace wrote the story for a newspaper and it appeared in book form in 1929 as the first title in the Readers Library Crime Series. It is one of his shortest novels and among his lightest, a game of identity played against the reader as much as against the police. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
