Room 13
Johnny Gray comes out of Dartmoor after serving time for a racing fraud he says he did not commit, and goes straight to the house of Peter Kane, the retired master criminal whose daughter he loves, only to find her about to marry a man he knows to be a crook. Behind the wedding stands the Big Printer, a forger whose banknotes are flooding the country, and watching everything from the Public Prosecutor's office is a mild, elderly, side-whiskered man named J. G. Reeder. Edgar Wallace published the novel in 1924. It is the book in which Reeder first appears, in a supporting role, and the room of the title is in a riverside inn where the reckoning takes place. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
