The adventures of Heine
Heine is a German secret agent of modest talent and large self-regard who is stationed in New York when the war breaks out in 1914 and is soon posted to London, where he reports back on his triumphs over the stupid English. The joke, sustained across sixteen linked episodes, is that the reader can see what Heine cannot: that he is being played at every turn by the British, who find him useful. Edgar Wallace published the stories in 1919, drawing on his own wartime journalism and on the public appetite for spy fiction. It is one of his comic books, closer to the humor of the trenches than to his later thrillers. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
