The Angel in the House
The Angel in the House is Coventry Patmore's long poem on courtship and marriage, published in two parts in 1854 and 1856 and later joined to a sequel. Written in short lyric cantos, each introduced by brief preludes, it tells how Felix Vaughan woos and marries Honoria, the daughter of a cathedral dean, and celebrates married love as the highest form of the spiritual life. The poem was enormously popular in Victorian England and was praised by Ruskin and others. Its title later became a byword for the ideal of the devoted domestic wife that Virginia Woolf and other writers set out to kill, and it is now read as much as a document as a poem. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
