The Analects of Confucius (from the Chinese Classics)

The Analects, or Lun Yu, are the sayings and short conversations of Confucius recorded by his disciples and their pupils in the generations after his death in 479 BC. There is no system here, only a man answering questions about how to behave: filial piety, the duties of a ruler, the conduct of a gentleman, friendship, learning, ritual, music, and the virtue he called ren, humaneness, which he said consisted in not doing to others what you would not want done to yourself. The book shaped Chinese education and government for two thousand years. James Legge, the Scottish missionary who became Oxford's first professor of Chinese, made this translation in 1861, and it remained the standard for a century. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
