Spoon River Anthology, published in 1915, made Edgar Lee Masters famous overnight. In some two hundred and forty short free-verse monologues, the dead of a small Illinois town speak from the hill where they are buried, each telling the truth about a life the town never knew: the druggist, the village atheist, the judge, the unfaithful wives and husbands, the poet who never left, the girl ruined and the woman who ruined her. Many of the speakers answer one another, and the pieces slowly compose a portrait of a community of hypocrisy, thwarted longing and occasional grace. The Spooniad, a mock epic, and an Epilogue close the book. Masters drew on the towns of his own boyhood. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
